Spinalonga island - Elounda - Agios Nikolaos

This tour begins with the visit in Agios Nikolaos a town with 14.000 inhabitants which is built on the side of the Gulf of Mirabello. In the centre of Agios Nikolaos is the lake Voulismeni, probably created by an earthquake. Here you will have enough time to visit the town, walk through its steep picturesque streets, look into its numerous shops and drink your first cup of coffee, watching the quiet and measured life of this port town.
Continue our way to the village of Elounda where we will get on the boat and after few minutes arrive at the island of Spinalonga. Here you can stroll through the fortress, look into the preserved houses and churches and admire the amazing views of the Mirabello Gulf.
The island of Spinalonga draws you in. It has such a rich and intriguing history. Like it almost encapsulates the history of Crete. Stories of pirates, Venetians, fortresses, battles and stories about when it was home for many years for those with leprosy. Spinalonga, the last leper colony in Europe, we will have a guided tour around this famous island, which is just a distance of 850m. Originally, Venetians fortified the islet in 1579, by building a fortress with 40 cannons and they are actually the best preserved walls in Europe. It used to be a leper colony from 1903 until 1957, where lepers could have a better life, medical help and economical support. The ruins of the market street with the shops, the hospital and many small houses in which lepers lived isolated, can still be seen. The word 'spina-longa' is Italian for 'long spine'. The island is popular with visitors for boat tours to enjoy its unusual history and its aqua marine bays.
On our way back on the boat, we are having a stop on the beach "Kolokytha", where you can enjoy swimming and a BBQ lunch. Or time in Elounda depends wich tour you prefer.
After we return back to your accomodation.
