Our first stop will be the Arkadi monastery – one of the most important monasteries on the island of Crete. It is not known when the temple complex was built and there are many versions. Most agree that the first religious buildings in this place have 10-11 V. the Main Church of the monastery dates back to the 16th century. During the Turkish occupation, the island was twice plundered and partially destroyed. In 1866, he held a brutal defense against the 15-thousand Turkish army, for which he became a symbol of the struggle for the independence of Greece, and UNESCO declared it a European monument Of Freedom. When the country became an independent state, the monastery was restored and in this form has reached our days. All temple buildings are scattered over a large area of 5200 sq. m. the Main attraction is the Church of the Transfiguration.
Next we will visit the famous springs of Argiroupolis. Crete is absolutely amazing place, about which I can talk endlessly. Perhaps, Argyroupoli, one of them. After all, this is a unique and unique place, still ready to tell us the great history of those places, to surprise the stunning nature and beautiful scenery. Around sprawling plane trees, fruit trees. Everywhere you hear the murmur of streams, the noise of waterfalls and water escaping from the leaky Roman aqueducts. And, as if built into all this splendor, taverns, surprising for its originality. In them you can taste lamb ribs, grilled, sturgeon or trout, enjoy the freshness of watermelon, cooled in cool water sources.
Our next stop will be lake kurnas - the only freshwater lake in Crete. The lake is in a picturesque quiet location and is surrounded by high green hills. Here You can swim and sunbathe, ride a catamaran and watch the turtles that live in the lake. Like all of Greece, lake kurnas also has its own myths and legends about its origin.
The final point of the program will be a mysterious and majestic cave Melidoni. The cave has long been of great interest to speleologists and archaeologists. After all, the most important archaeological excavations were carried out here, as a result of which important discoveries were made, clearly indicating that the cave of Melidoni was used continuously for several thousand years and was a cult place. Thanks to careful study of the inscriptions found in the cave, it was suggested that this was the place of worship of Hermes. Also here worshipped Zeus and the bronze giant Talos, who, according to legend, lived in this cave and guarded the island of Crete, three times a day running around it. Unfortunately, in 1824, the cave Melidoni becomes a place where there is a terrible tragedy that claimed the lives of 370 people. It is hard to believe how amazingly rich history Melidoni cave has, how important role it played in different periods of time. This is a special, majestic place created by nature, worthy of admiration and great respect…
